What happens during an X-ray?

During an X-ray procedure, you can expect your provider to have you wear a gown and remove jewelry and clothing near the areas where they perform the X-ray. They position you on an X-ray table and place the part of your body they need to X-ray between the X-ray machine and a cassette holding the X-ray film or image plate. Your provider may have you sit or stand. They cover other parts of your body with a protective lead apron. You need to sit very still as the X-ray beams work to take an image. Your provider may take various angles of the body part they’re studying. For children, your provider may use comfortable restraints or other friendly techniques to keep them still in a comfortable manner. You can stay with them during the test as you wear a lead apron to shield you from any unnecessary radiation. The procedure is quick and painless, with no recovery time. Results are immediate, and once your provider studies the X-ray, they can identify any health condition or injury, and develop a treatment plan for you. If you need more specialized care, they may refer you to an outside physician.
